As part of the AHSS Strathclyde Group Winter Lecture Series, Gordon R Urquhart, historian and author, examines the ironwork designs emanating from the “fertile mind and facile pencil” of Victorian architect James Sellars and explores the often-misunderstood relationship between Glasgow’s architects and its major iron foundries.
Why not come along to the Garnethill hall in the Renfield Centre and see Charles McCrossan share his photographs of Waverley around the British coastline.
This month, Alastair Dinsmor, who leads Glasgow's Police Museum, gives an interesting talk on the history of the Police Service in Glasgow.
More than a few people have written books about, or set in, the Blythswood area of the city but Sara Sheridan is perhaps unique in writing a 'Blythswood' mystery set in the era in which the Old Glasgow Club was born. It's intriguing that the 'Secrets... ' she unveils might even be the secrets of some of our early members - you might want to check if your forebearers' names are mentioned..
Wednesday 6 November - Blythswood Hall, Renfield Centre, Glasgow
Jamie Ramsay is a Scottish born endurance adventurer who has completed over 54,000 km of human-powered expeditions: trail running, bikepacking, fast-packing, mountaineering, ski touring and even trekking with camels. Hear about his most iconic journey: a solo, unsupported run spanning 17,000 kilometres from Vancouver to Buenos Aires. Carrying all his essentials in a baby stroller Jamie visited 14 countries, collecting unforgettable experiences along the way. His approach to adventure is rooted in personal challenge and cultural connection rather than chasing records or firsts. Jamie will reflect on the extraordinary moments and insights gained throughout this transformative expedition, now captured in his recently published memoir Running the Americas.

Scottish harpist Lucie Hendry returns to the stage this September with her trio, sharing
music from her upcoming second album, Ashes to Art. Blending the Scottish folk tradition
with the vibrant Nordic contemporary scene, Lucie’s innovative, nature-inspired music
reflects her life between Scotland and Denmark.
She is joined by Scottish guitarist Chris Amer and Danish drummer Christoffer Skovhus.
Together, they bring Lucie’s original compositions to life with intricate melodies, rich
rhythmic textures, and a cross-cultural spirit that honours tradition and embraces curiosity.
Following the success of her debut solo album Land of Eden — released in June 2023,
receiving national airplay in both the UK and Denmark — Lucie and her trio have
performed at major festivals including Celtic Connections, Stonehaven Folk Festival,
Godtfolk, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and Aarhus Jazz Festival.
A rising voice in contemporary folk, Lucie was a finalist in BBC Radio Scotland’s Young
Traditional Musician of the Year 2021 and a nominee for ‘Up and Coming Artist of the
Year’ at the 2023 Scots Trad Music Awards. With Ashes to Art, she continues to chart a
bold, expressive path for the lever harp in modern folk music.

The libretto was promoted as a “Dramma giocoso,” a genre that denoted a mixture of comedy and serious action. Mozart famously recorded it as an “opera buffa.”
“Don Giovanni” was commissioned right after Mozart's highly successful trip to Prague in 1787.
The opera is widely regarded as a part of Mozart's best creations, apart from being called one of the greatest operas of all time. “Don Giovanni” become a constructive subject for philosophers and writers. It is now a staple of the Customary “operatic repertoire.” It also ranks 9th in the list of most-performed operas, according to Operabase.
